At present, there are mainly four categories and fifteen types of common grid structures.
1. Grid structures composed of planar truss systems are classified into four types based on the number and orientation of the planar truss systems: (1) Two-way orthogonal and upright grid structure (2) Two-way orthogonal and inclined grid structure (3) Two-way oblique and inclined grid structure (4) Three-way grid structure
2. Grid structures composed of tetrahedral pyramids
According to the combination mode of the pyramids and the direction of the connecting top chord bars of the cones, they are classified into six types: (1) Regularly placed tetrahedral pyramid grid (2) Regularly placed hollow tetrahedral pyramid grid (3) Inclined tetrahedral pyramid grid (4) Checkerboard-shaped tetrahedral pyramid grid (5) Star-shaped tetrahedral pyramid grid (6) Unidirectional zigzag grid, also known as folded plate grid
3. The trilateral pyramid-shaped frame structure is classified into four types based on the combination method of the triangular pyramids and the connection method of the apex struts: (1) Triangular pyramid frame (2) Vacuum-truncated triangular pyramid type frame (3) Vacuum-truncated triangular pyramid type frame (4) Honeycomb-shaped triangular pyramid frame
4. A net structure composed of hexagonal pyramids
In addition to the 15 types of grid structures mentioned above in the four major categories, many new types of grid structures have also been derived. For example: composite grid structures, hybrid grid structures (pre-stressed grid structures, cable-stayed grid structures, suspension grid structures), and other new types of grid structures (open-web grid structures, folded plate-shaped grid structures, three-layer and multi-layer grid structures, bird's nest-shaped grid structures).
